Castor oil is a thick, yellowish oil that comes from the seeds of the castor plant. It has been used for centuries as a laxative, a skin moisturizer, a wound healer, and an anti-inflammatory agent. The desirable component in Castor Oil is ricinoleic acid. When ingested, the small intestine releases the ricinoleic acid from the castor oil, which mildly irritates mucosa in the intestines, leading to a laxative effect.
Castor oil packs are a simple way of applying castor oil to the body, usually over an area that needs healing or detoxification. This allows it to absorb through your skin and into tissue. Castor oil packs have been shown to:
- Boost immune system by increasing immune cells, such as white blood cells
- Aid detoxification
- Reduce pain in joints and menstrual cramps
- Relieve skin disorders, such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and eczema
Castor oil packing is a naturopathic technique used to holistically support health. This technique can be used across different areas of the body (always packing the liver first) and is especially effective in combination with detoxification programmes.
See the Suggested Use tab to see how to apply a Castor Oil or Clay pack.
Cautions
Keep out castor oil packing material out of reach of children.
Not recommended for use during menstruation or pregnancy.
Do not use packing on areas of irritated or sore skin.
Castor oil may stain clothing or bedding – use an old towel or t-shirt when the pack is in place on the body.
To make a castor oil wrap
Open the packing fabric and fold into three. Soak the fabric with the castor oil and apply the pack to the liver area first for around 30 minutes, securing in place with cling film. Place a hot water bottle on the castor oil pack and rest in a quiet place for the allotted time. You can then move the pack to your chosen area, packing for another 30 - 60 minutes, or as directed by a practitioner. The pack can be placed back into the plastic bag provided and stored in the fridge.
To make a clay pack
Mix clay with warm water to make a paste. Apply quickly to the cloth to prevent cooling. Place on the area to be treated. Cover with a plastic covering over it (i.e. Cling Film) and leave overnight or until dry.
Storage
Once used, seal in a plastic bag and store in fridge. The castor oil pack can be re-used up to 30 times. Apply extra castor oil to the pack as needed on each application.
