What are the benefits of Vitamin E

Posted By:Juliet

A crucially important nutrient with antioxidant capability, vitamin E offers a multitude of benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer…..

Vitamin E is a generic term for a group of related compounds called tocopherols, the most potent form being alpha-tocopherol. It is found in only a small quantity of foods many of which are high in fat, making it difficult to get an adequate amount if you are on a low fat diet, supplementation can therefore be useful.

One of vitamin E’s basic functions is to protect cell membranes. As an antioxidant it assists in destroying and neutralising free radicals, the unstable oxygen molecules that cause damage to cells, giving it its disease-fighting reputation and therefore likely playing a role in preventing cancer and improving immune function. Research also indicates that it can help to protect against cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes, by reducing the harmful effects of bad cholesterol and preventing blood clots. Other studies have shown that vitamin E is beneficial in the prevention and treatment of lung disease, cataracts, Alzheimer’s and other neurological problems and aids in skin healing.

It can be found naturally in wheat germ, avocados, vegetable oils, broccoli, eggs and oily fish.

Vitamin E is best taken in its natural form (d-alpha)
